The Democrat-controlled Congress last week at least tacitly acknowledged that their left-wing supporters are responsible for the vast majority of political violence in the country.
Earlier this month, someone at the U.S. Supreme Court engaged in an unprecedented act, leaking a majority draft opinion overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that improperly ‘legalized’ the murder of unborn babies. The ruling, authored by Justice Samuel Alito and signed by a majority on the high court, did not ban the procedure but merely cited Roe as having been “egregiously” wrong all these decades and returns the issue back to states (and their elected representatives) where it should have been all along.
Also, the opinion was just a draft; it is not official and it’s not even clear that a high court majority still agrees with Alito’s opinion, though a report last week indicated that they do.
But no matter. The Democrat Marxist left has the same response to every political, social and cultural issue that does not go their way: Violence.
Following the leak, left-wing media lunatics and talking heads cheered the leak but blasted the justices for overturning Roe; in other words, blowing up one of the last remaining functional institutions in our country is perfectly fine, but issuing an opinion they don’t like, that’s the real problem.
The Biden regime followed suit and ripped the ruling, not the fact that the trust in the Supreme Court has been violated and destroyed. And in taking that view, the regime gave the go-ahead for their militant foot soldiers to begin literally breaking the law by descending upon justices’ homes and protesting.
The protests, however, did not poll well, so in response, Democrats (and Republicans) in the Senate last week passed a measure to provide enhanced security for justices, per The Hill:
The Senate on Monday easily cleared a bill to extend security protections to the immediate family members of Supreme Court justices.
The bill — spearheaded by Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) — passed the Senate by unanimous consent, meaning all 100 senators had to sign off in order for it to pass without a formal vote.
It still now heads to the House for passage.
“Threats to the physical safety of Supreme Court Justices and their families are disgraceful, and attempts to intimidate and influence the independence of our judiciary cannot be tolerated,” Cornyn said in a statement.
“I’m glad the Senate quickly approved this measure to extend Supreme Court police protection to family members, and the House must take up and pass it immediately,” he added.
Coons, in a statement, said that he was “glad to see this bipartisan bill unanimously pass the Senate in order to extend security protection to the families of Supreme Court members.”
Meanwhile, the House is planning to pass a broader bill that would extend protections to court personnel and their families — including, presumably, the one who leaked the draft opinion.
“Our Majority is determined to protect those who serve our country in the federal judiciary, and we believe that this effort must extend not only to the family members of judges and justices but to the family members of the clerks and staff who support them and have increasingly faced threats to their physical safety,” House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a statement Thursday night.
In response, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) criticized Democrats for “standing in the way of concrete action.”
“House Democratic leadership wants to drag this out,” McConnell said.
He’s right, of course, but the broader point is this: If the left wasn’t instinctively violent and reactionary, the bill would not be necessary in the first place.
And here’s hoping the high court’s marshal finds out who the leaker is and punishes them accordingly.
