Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for supporters of former President Donald Trump to be “deprogrammed” during an interview with CNN.
The former first lady made a distinction between the Republican Party’s more moderate wing and the Make America Great Again (MAGA) wing, with Clinton describing the latter as a “cult.” She also highlighted the prevalence of extremism in the GOP’s MAGA wing, citing concerns about individuals aligning themselves with it. According to the former head of the Department of State, Trump has a “heavy influence” over MAGA – which essentially means an America-first policy.
“Sadly, so many of these extremists – those MAGA extremists – take their marching orders from Trump, who has no credibility left by any measure,” Clinton remarked. “At some point, you know, maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members. Something needs to happen.”
According to the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, Trump’s supporters are drawn to his confrontational style of politics. She noted that this following can be described as resembling that of a cult. Given this, Clinton underscored the importance of breaking this pattern.
“Maybe they don’t like [illegal immigrants], maybe they don’t like gay people or Black people. [Maybe they don’t like] the woman who got the promotion at work they didn’t get, whatever the reason. So it is like a cult, and somebody has to break the momentum.” (Related: Hillary Clinton calls for ‘formal deprogramming’ of MAGA ‘cult members.’)
The interview was not the first time Clinton openly derided the supporters of the former president. Back in 2016, she dubbed 50 percent of them as belonging to a “basket of deplorables” holding prejudiced views.
“You can put half of Trump supporters into what I call a basket of deplorables – racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it,” she said at the time.
The wife of former President Bill Clinton lost to Trump during the 2016 presidential elections. Despite winning the popular vote by having nearly three million more votes than her opponent, Clinton only garnered 232 electoral votes compared to Trump’s 306.
But based on Clinton’s remarks during the interview, it appears that she still has Trump Derangement Syndrome seven years after losing to him.
In October 2022 – exactly a year before the interview – she reportedly denied the results of the 2024 presidential election. “Right-wing extremists already have a plan to literally steal the presidential election,” she warned at the time. Given this, the former secretary of state called on her supporters to “take the fight [against] MAGA Republicans at the state level.”
Clinton also called attention to the “right-wing controlled Supreme Court,” which she claimed would ultimately grant state legislatures the power to overturn presidential elections. “If that happens, the 2024 presidential election will be decided, not by the popular vote or even by the anachronistic Electoral College, but by state legislatures.”
The former first lady ultimately urged supporters to donate to the “crush the coup” campaign “to help defend democracy,” adding: “This could not be more important or more urgent.”
