The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) posted on X platform Thursday night, Dec. 7, that it is “aware of possible First Amendment activity.”
The reference to “possible First Amendment activity” raises concerns for those who value their fundamental rights to free speech, religion, press, peaceful assembly and petitioning the government.
LAPD HQ, without specifying the nature of the mentioned activity, announced that additional uniformed personnel and resources, in collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service, would be deployed to ensure public safety in the Los Angeles area over the next few days. While expressing a commitment to work with protest organizers to facilitate lawful demonstrations, LAPD emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for any form of violence.
The department urged individuals and groups involved in protests or counter-protests to prevent those expressing an intent to commit violence or damage property from compromising an otherwise lawful demonstration.
The LAPD’s unusual statement sparked comments from users, with many questioning the use of the term “possible First Amendment activity.”
In an X post, RBe wrote: “Do these people realize how Orwellian they sound when they use the ridiculous ‘first amendment activity’ term? Protests. Say ‘protests.’ And when (not if) those protests turn violent, call them ‘riots.’ Because they’re riots. Good Lord.”
Mr T 2, on the other hand, posted: “Government is warning people of ‘first amendment activity.’ If it isn’t an indication that we live in a police state, I don’t know what is.”
FeniX Ammunition warned: “Possible First Amendment activity? You f#ck!ng serious? This is where we’re heading, guys. If you haven’t started planning for the future yet, you have a lot of ground to make up but it’s not too late.”
The warning from LAPD came ahead of a weekend visit by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to Southern California for a fundraising swing. Biden and his wife arrived separately in the Los Angeles area on Friday, Dec. 8, for a fundraising tour that included a star-studded event in Holmby Hills featuring Hollywood elites.
The president was scheduled to be in Los Angeles until Sunday, participating in fundraising activities on both Friday and Saturday nights.
Jill arrived first, landing at Hollywood Burbank Airport early Friday afternoon. She proceeded to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, touring research laboratories as part of the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research. Joe arrived at Los Angeles International Airport around 5 p.m., heading to Santa Monica via a military helicopter before entering a motorcade for an evening fundraiser in the Holmby Hills area.
The event is expected to be attended by notable figures such as Steven Spielberg, Shonda Rhimes, Peter Chernin, Jim Gianopulos, Rob Reiner and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Jeffrey Katzenberg, co-founder of DreamWorks, is also hosting a fundraising gathering for Biden during his visit.
The fundraising swing drew criticism from Republican Party officials, who expressed discontent with Biden’s focus on Hollywood elites rather than addressing issues affecting Californians.
As with any presidential visit, temporary traffic disruptions were expected, and protests have emerged, particularly related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
