A former United States ambassador to Israel has come up with a plan to help Israel fully annex the West Bank and make American taxpayers foot the bill.
David Friedman, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Israel from 2017 to 2021 under the administration of former President Donald Trump, is set to release a book detailing a plan to divert $1 billion in U.S. humanitarian aid for the occupied Palestinian territories to finance the annexation of the West Bank.
In his upcoming book, “One Jewish State: The Last, Best Hope to Resolve the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict,” Friedman wrote about his belief that American support for Israel despite its illegal and inhumane actions toward Palestinians is “based first and foremost on biblical prophecies and values.” (Related: UN experts demand targeted sanctions, arms embargo against Israel for crimes against humanity.)
Friedman wrote that Israel will require U.S. financial assistance “to assert and maintain its sovereignty over Judea and Samaria,” the term Israel uses to refer to the West Bank.
He recommends that the next Republican administration and Congress could redirect $1 billion from existing aid to the Palestinians, along with funds meant for the Palestinian security force, to finance the annexation plan, which he said will help improve the lives of Palestinians and allow them to live under Israeli control.
“The easiest bucket to tap into and reposition is that of the United States,” Friedman said.
Meanwhile, Trump has remained silent on what he might do concerning issues of specific interest to Jewish Americans.
Friedman in the book dedicated a whole chapter to comparing the Palestinians living under Israeli authority to the people of Puerto Rico, which was designated as an American territory following Spain’s defeat in the Spanish-American War of 1898.
“Palestinians, like Puerto Ricans, will not vote in national elections. Palestinians will be free to enact their own governing documents as long as they are not inconsistent with those of Israel,” Friedman wrote.
While Puerto Ricans are considered American citizens and have the right to vote if they move to another state, Friedman does not recommend that Israel create this similar class distinction for Palestinians in the West Bank.
“This is a huge opportunity for the expansion of the Abraham Accords around the concept of One Jewish State,” wrote Friedman.
Friedman is not the first person to suggest that the U.S. should provide support for Israeli plans to annex the West Bank.
Early this year, it was reported that Miriam Adelson, the widow of businessman and former Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson, sought Trump’s support for Israeli annexation of the West Bank in exchange for $100 million contribution to his presidential campaign.
She later denied suggesting this annexation plan.
