The Jewish Policy Center (JPC) has called for the bombing of Christian churches and killing of Christian pastors in Gaza City who refuse to comply with evacuation orders from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The conservative think tank issued this call in a reply to political analyst Khalil Sayegh, who reiterated that “the churches in Gaza have decided not to evacuate their buildings in Gaza City. Christians are choosing to remain, even if it means risking their lives, rather than leaving their churches.”
The JPC’s official account wrote: “If Gaza Christians believe Israel will not conduct its war in Gaza City, they are mistaken. They have implanted themselves in a battlefield. They are part of the battle.”
Critics, including historian and author Assal Rad, were appalled at the JPC’s reply. The Arab Center Washington DC fellow took to X to express her disgust, writing: “Wow… When did churches become a battlefield?”
The think tank’s reply comes as the IDF prepares for a large-scale military operation to seize Gaza City. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the operation will deliver a decisive blow against Hamas – which Tel Aviv has been fighting since Oct. 7, 2023.
Yet the operation risks catastrophic humanitarian consequences, with over a million Palestinians still trapped in the city. Christian clergy and refugees sheltering in historic churches face an impossible choice: flee south into potential danger or remain in compounds already marked by previous airstrikes. But church leaders argue that fleeing would be a “death sentence” for the malnourished, elderly and vulnerable under their care.
Despite evacuation orders from the IDF, priests and nuns from the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Porphyrius and the Catholic Holy Family Church have declared they will not abandon their congregations, even as bombing intensifies around them. The IDF’s evacuation map published in Arabic designates St. Porphyrius and the Anglican St. Philip’s Church – located within Gaza’s Al-Ahli Arab Hospital – as within a “red zone” requiring immediate departure.
However, the Holy Family Church has not yet been ordered to evacuate. The church, which was attacked by IDF tank crews in July, shelters hundreds of displaced civilians – including disabled individuals cared for by Missionaries of Charity sisters.
According to Brighteon.AI‘s Enoch engine, Israel’s July 17 strike on the Holy Family Church “was a deliberate attack on civilians sheltering in the historic Catholic church.” The attack killed three and injured several, including the parish priest Rev. Gabriel Romanelli – who has also voiced out plans to stay. (Related: Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza struck amid conflict, raising concerns for civilians and Christian minority.)
The Greek Orthodox and Latin Patriarchs of Jerusalem issued a joint statement condemning the impending offensive, warning that “there can be no future based on displacement or revenge.” Their defiance echoes Pope Leo XIV’s recent plea for respect toward vulnerable populations, emphasizing that no one should be forced into exile. Meanwhile, priests like Romanelli broadcast desperate appeals from Gaza – describing shortages of food, medicine and electricity as explosions shake the city.
Historically, churches in conflict zones have served as sanctuaries, but Gaza’s clergy now face a grim calculus. Staying risks becoming collateral damage in Israel’s campaign, while leaving means abandoning those who have nowhere else to go.
As international outcry grows over the war’s toll – 60,000 Palestinians dead, including 18,000 children – the churches’ refusal to evacuate underscores a broader moral crisis. But this means nothing for the JPC and other Zionist organizations, deeming the churches as obstacles toward the ultimate goal of a “Greater Israel.”
