Leaders from Oakland, the East Bay’s largest city, unanimously voted to pass a resolution that protects abortion rights, effectively making it a “sanctuary city” for women seeking abortions. The city will become an accessory to murder – a collaborator in the murders of the unborn and an ally of baby killers.
This was made in response to the leaked draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court suggesting that it is poised to overthrow the landmark case Roe v. Wade later in the summer.
The resolution calls for several things, including the declaration of Oakland as a “sanctuary city” for women seeking abortions, especially those who are coming from other states where abortions might someday become illegal.
Moreover, the resolution calls on Congress to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify abortion into law. It also calls on the state and counties across California to provide money for abortion and contraceptives.
Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan said: “We know there is a right-wing effort to turn back the clock on racial justice, on voting rights, on reproductive freedom and on the right for people to love whom they choose, so we need to oppose this effort with our laws, with our actions and be in solidarity with one another in this fight.”
Many Republicans have been vocal about opposing abortion, arguing that the fetus is a human being and aborting is taking away a life.
People in Oakland have a different opinion.
On Tuesday morning, May 17, abortion rights supporters rallied in front of the Oakland City Hall. Shortly before 5 p.m. on the same day, hundreds of people gathered at the Ron V. Dellums Federal Building in downtown Oakland, bearing their own signs with slogans that read, “keep your laws off my body.”
Council President Pro Tempore Sheng Thao said the passage of the resolution makes Oakland the first city in California to declare itself a Sanctuary City for Abortion Access. Its first step is to expand abortion access to anyone who needs it.
“Healthcare is a human right, and the City of Oakland stands firmly behind anyone exercising their right to reproductive care,” said Thao.
She also said the resolution addresses women across the country who are under attack, and ensures that their rights are protected. “Your autonomy, your agency, your access will be protected here. And those who would threaten or harass you will not be tolerated or enabled here in Oakland.” (Related: Left-wing abortion terrorists vow to target conservative Supreme Court justices who signed on to draft repeal of Roe v. Michigan could also establish its own blueprint for reaffirming abortion rights at the state level in case the Supreme Court does overturn Roe v. Wade.
Because the Supreme Court ruling would leave abortion rights up to individual states, Michigan could preserve its status quo by making abortion bans unconstitutional.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat who is up for re-election in the fall, and Planned Parenthood of Michigan filed separate lawsuits to protect abortion rights under the state constitution and to prevent the enforcement of a 1931 state law that criminalized most abortions, which could take effect if Roe v. Wade is struck down. A ballot initiative is also already underway to put abortion protections in place.
There are currently 13 states with “trigger laws,” or pre-Roe bans that would prohibit abortion once the case is overturned.
Under the 1931 law, abortions are illegal and punishable by up to four years in prison. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, but abortion to preserve the mother’s life is allowed. Roe superseded the law, but has never been repealed.
Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is also up for election, said at a press conference that she believes the law would take immediate effect after Roe is overturned, although some policy experts disagreed. A person who performs an abortion could also be charged under this law, which could potentially include doctors or women who self-abort, either through a procedure or medication. Nessel and county prosecutors in seven of the 13 counties with abortion providers said they will not be enforcing the old law if Roe is struck down.
